吕布 / Lü Bu

吕布 / Lü Bu is developed across the Hanji 1015-1019 late-Han branch as a militarily dangerous but politically unstable powerholder. Hanji 1015 first frames him as 曹操’s eastern flank problem. 郭嘉 and 荀彧 argue that if Cao Cao waits until 袁绍 is free from the 公孙瓒 war, Lü Bu could combine with Yuan Shao and make the northern confrontation much more dangerous.

Hanji 1016 shows the pre-1017 marriage-alliance reversal: Lü Bu first accepts 袁术’s proposal through 韩胤, sends his daughter toward Yuan Shu, then follows 陈珪’s warning that the marriage would expose 徐州 and stain Lü Bu with Yuan Shu’s illegitimacy.

The result is both tactical and character-revealing. Lü Bu recalls his daughter, sends Han Yin to 曹操’s court, and opens the route for 陈登 to travel toward Cao Cao. The source therefore makes Lü Bu available to Chen Gui’s persuasion before the later pages show him angry, suspicious, and dependent.

Hanji 1017 gives the compact diagnosis 轻于去就: Lü Bu is brave, but his quick changes of affiliation make durable trust nearly impossible.

That source treats Lü Bu’s instability as a strategic problem for both 陈登 and 曹操. Chen Deng urges early action, and Cao Cao’s “诚难久养” answer marks Lü Bu as a force that can be used only with caution, not safely maintained as a loyal partner.

Hanji 1018 shows him expecting Chen Deng to secure the 徐州 governor title from Cao Cao, then raging when Chen Deng and 陈珪 benefit while he does not.

Chen Deng’s answer turns Cao Cao’s mistrust into 饥附饱扬, a diagnosis that Lü Bu’s attachment lasts only while he remains dependent. The same episode gives Lü Bu a tactical success: after 陈珪 identifies 袁术’s coalition as brittle, Lü Bu persuades 韩暹 and 杨奉 to reverse sides against 张勋.

The later half of Hanji 1018 also shows the cost of Lü Bu’s short horizon. He ignores 高顺’s warning not to demand supplies from 张霸 in person, fails to get them, and loses face. Hanji 1019 then keeps the personnel-judgment branch compact: Lü Bu trusts 魏续 more than Gao Shun even though the source treats Gao Shun as the loyal one.
