毛遂 / Mao Sui
毛遂 / Mao Sui enters the wiki through 《资治通鉴·周纪》96丨毛遂自荐(1) as a 平原君 retainer during 赵国’s post-长平之战 emergency. With 秦国 pressing 邯郸, 赵丹 / 赵孝成王 sends Pingyuanjun to seek aid from 楚国.
The episode says Pingyuanjun wants twenty retainers with both literary and martial ability, but can only select nineteen. Mao Sui volunteers himself for the mission. Pingyuanjun initially doubts him because Mao Sui has been in the household for three years without visible reputation.
Mao Sui answers with the awl-in-a-bag image: if he had already been placed in the bag, the point would not merely show but pierce through. In this source, Mao Sui is therefore less a completed hero than a latent retainer demanding the chance to be tested, and his exchange becomes the source for 毛遂自荐 and “脱颖而出.”
《资治通鉴·周纪》96丨毛遂自荐(2) gives Mao Sui the performance that part 1 deferred. When 平原君 and 楚考烈王 discuss 合纵 from sunrise to sunset without result, Mao Sui presses his sword, climbs the steps, and makes the king’s physical vulnerability “within ten paces” part of the negotiation.
The episode’s interpretation is that Mao Sui succeeds by joining risk, rhetoric, and speed. He first breaks the audience hierarchy, then uses dignity-based persuasion: Chu has vast land and troops, yet 白起 once took its capital region, burned Yiling, and damaged royal tombs. Mao Sui turns that shame into a reason for Chu to ally with 赵国, and then forces the commitment into an immediate blood oath before the king’s willingness can dissipate.
