Overview

马续 / Ma Xu is the Duliao general in the 140 CE Southern Xiongnu crisis. In the current wiki, he is important less as an offensive hero than as the commander through whom Liang Shang’s defensive-surrender strategy becomes state policy.

Current Profile

Hanji 820 places Ma Xu in the middle of the Southern Xiongnu revolt after Wusi and Che Niu besiege Meiji and kill frontier officials. Ma Xu and Liang Bing defeat the rebels with a mixed frontier force, but the revolt regroups, showing that an early battlefield win does not settle the political problem.

When Chen Gui’s unauthorized coercion unsettles surrender prospects, Liang Shang argues that Ma Xu understands the frontier and that his letters already match the court’s best strategy. Emperor Shun orders Ma Xu to dig deep ditches, build high walls, show grace and trust, post reward deadlines, and avoid small victories that would damage the larger plan. More than 13,000 people under the Right Wise King’s camp submit under this approach.

Key Characteristics

  • Frontier commander whose effectiveness depends on discipline, posture, and surrender signaling more than pursuit.
  • Works as Liang Shang’s operational instrument during the Southern Xiongnu revolt.
  • Demonstrates that winning an encounter and resolving a frontier rebellion are different tasks.
  • Sits between failed coercion by Chen Gui and later military cleanup by Zhang Dan.

Evidence

  • Defensive-surrender command: Hanji 820 says Ma Xu’s campaign becomes tied to Liang Shang’s advice to fortify, reassure, reward, and wait rather than pursue small wins.
  • Limited meaning of early victory: Hanji 820 first shows Ma Xu and Liang Bing beating rebel forces, then shows Wusi and Che Niu able to revive the revolt.
  • Court trust through expert correspondence: Hanji 820 has Liang Shang cite Ma Xu’s frontier familiarity and letters as reasons to keep him in command.

Qualifications

This page is bounded to Hanji 820. Ma Xu’s lineage, wider career, and later service are not yet synthesized in this wiki.
