孟陀 / Meng Tuo (late Han)
孟陀 / Meng Tuo enters through Hanji 897 as the negative counterpart to 段熲’s command credibility. The episode presents him as a wealthy merchant who wants office but lacks a direct path, so he spends years bribing a servant in 张让’s household.
His key move is not a normal bribe request. After exhausting his own wealth, Meng Tuo asks the household servant to kneel to him publicly at Zhang Rang’s gate. Onlookers infer that Meng has special access to Zhang Rang, send Meng large gifts to broker their own access, and Meng passes enough of those gifts onward to win Zhang Rang’s favor.
The source treats the later 疏勒 failure as the practical test of this route. Meng Tuo becomes inspector of 凉州, but the office does not create military ability; the failed forty-day attack on Shule exposes the difference between 假势通道套利 and real command capacity.
