孟云 / Meng Yun (Eastern Han)
Updated · 2 episodes · 1 show · 2 source notes
Overview
孟云 / Meng Yun now has both sides of the early Zhangdi Xiongnu credibility problem. Hanji 754 presents him as the Wuwei administrator who supports opening mutual trade with Northern Xiongnu and then faces Southern Xiongnu disruption of that market contact. Hanji 755 presents his later memorial warning that the raid has become a Han credibility problem requiring restitution.
Current Profile
Hanji 754 places Meng Yun at the start of the policy sequence. Northern Xiongnu asks for mutual trade; Meng Yun memorializes from Wuwei, and Emperor Zhang approves. Northern Xiongnu then bring more than ten thousand cattle and horses for trade, but the Southern Xiongnu chanyu raids and seizes many of the animals.
Hanji 755 turns that disruption into a formal credibility warning. Southern Xiongnu forces defeat a Northern Xiongnu group at Zhuoye Mountain and seize people and livestock. Meng Yun warns the court that Northern Xiongnu had already reached a reconciled posture with Han, so letting Southern Xiongnu retain the gains could make Northern Xiongnu think Han had deceived them.
His recommendation is restitution: Southern Xiongnu should return the seized captives and livestock to quiet Northern Xiongnu suspicion. The page therefore treats Meng Yun as a frontier credibility adviser whose trade-opening optimism must be protected by later compensation and restraint.
Key Characteristics
- Wuwei administrator involved in Northern Xiongnu market contact and later restitution warning.
- Frontier adviser who sees trade contact as a usable diplomatic channel.
- Analyst who reads allied Southern Xiongnu success as a possible credibility liability for Han.
- Proponent of returning Southern Xiongnu gains to prevent Northern Xiongnu retaliation.
- Setup figure for Hanji 756’s strategic forbearance decision.
Evidence
- Market-opening setup: Hanji 754 says Northern Xiongnu requests mutual trade, Meng Yun memorializes from Wuwei, and Emperor Zhang approves.
- Trade disruption: Hanji 754 says Northern Xiongnu bring more than ten thousand cattle and horses before Southern Xiongnu raid and seize many.
- Frontier office and warning: Hanji 755 identifies Meng Yun as Wuwei administrator and says he warns that Southern Xiongnu action could make Northern Xiongnu believe Han had deceived them.
- Restitution recommendation: Hanji 755 says Meng Yun recommends returning captured people and livestock.
- Policy setup: Hanji 755 frames the recommendation as the issue behind the Zheng Hong/Fifth Lun versus Huan Yu/Yuan An debate later resolved in Hanji 756.
Qualifications
This page remains bounded to Hanji 754 and Hanji 755. It does not provide Meng Yun’s broader career or the full frontier correspondence record. The market-contact details and livestock counts are kept as source claims, while the page’s durable judgment is his role in turning frontier trade disruption into a credibility problem.
What Changed
- Added Hanji 754 as the mutual-trade opening and Southern Xiongnu raid setup.
- Reframed Hanji 755’s restitution warning as the continuation of a trade credibility problem, not only a raid aftermath.
Relationships
- 汉章帝 - ruler who approves the trade contact and whose court receives Meng Yun’s credibility warning.
- 南匈奴 - allied frontier party whose raid and seized livestock create the dispute.
- 北匈奴 - frontier party Meng Yun wants reassured through credible trade and restitution.
- 退让留余地式治理 - concept developed when the court later chooses credibility over maximum allied gain.
- 桓虞 - minister who supports the restitution direction Meng Yun recommends.
