Minamoto no Yoshitomo

Overview

Minamoto no Yoshitomo is the defeated Minamoto leader whose failed 1159 coup creates the exile-and-survival conditions for Minamoto no Yoritomo.

In 1159, while Kiyomori is away on pilgrimage, Yoshitomo attempts a coup, seizes the young emperor, and kills Kiyomori’s allies.

The coup fails when Kiyomori returns to Kyoto, the emperor escapes, and Taira forces defeat the Minamoto. Yoshitomo flees and is murdered by an old ally while bathing, turning his children into either victims, exiles, or politically dangerous survivors.
