南皮 / Nanpi (late Han)

Overview

南皮 / Nanpi is the late-Han campaign site where 曹操 defeats 袁谭 in Hanji 1068 and where Hanji 1069 begins its aftermath through 王修’s request to bury Yuan Tan. The page exists to keep the final Yuan Tan battlefield distinct from similarly romanized or transcript-confused places.

Current Profile

Hanji 1068 presents Nanpi as Yuan Tan’s final defensive position. Cao Cao attacks in Jian’an 10 / 205 CE; after difficult fighting, 曹淳 argues that a deep expedition cannot afford delay, Cao Cao renews the assault, and the city falls. Yuan Tan flees and is killed during pursuit.

The same source then makes Nanpi a post-capture order problem. 李孚 tells Cao Cao that officials and commoners are confused and frightened, and that a recently surrendered local-trusted person should carry the order to stop internal killing and resume ordinary posts.

Hanji 1069 treats Nanpi as the aftermath setting. Wang Xiu asks permission to collect and bury Yuan Tan’s body, and Cao Cao grants the request, turning the defeated city from active resistance into a personnel and loyalty-sorting problem.

Key Characteristics

  • Final defensive site for Yuan Tan after the Yuan-family succession conflict has already been exploited by Cao Cao.
  • Deep-operation assault setting where Cao Chun’s tempo warning matters.
  • Post-capture pacification setting where Li Fu’s local credibility calms the city.
  • Aftermath setting for Wang Xiu’s burial request and Cao Cao’s treatment of former Yuan-side loyalty.

Evidence

  • Assault and fall: Hanji 1068 says Cao Cao attacks Yuan Tan at Nanpi, renews the assault after Cao Chun’s advice, and takes the city.
  • Yuan Tan’s death: Hanji 1068 says Yuan Tan flees Nanpi and is killed by Cao Chun’s pursuit.
  • Order repair: Hanji 1068 uses Nanpi to show Li Fu carrying Cao Cao’s order to calm officials and commoners.
  • Burial aftermath: Hanji 1069 says Wang Xiu requests permission to bury Yuan Tan after the defeat at Nanpi.

Qualifications

Hanji 1068’s supplied transcript writes the place as “南平”; this page normalizes the episode to Nanpi because Hanji 1069 and the surrounding Yuan Tan sequence use the final Nanpi aftermath. The normalization is source-scoped and should be revisited if a later source establishes that the episode meant a different place.

What Changed

  • Created from Hanji 1068 and Hanji 1069 to anchor Yuan Tan’s final campaign and immediate aftermath.

Relationships

  • 袁谭 - defender whose final defeat and death are tied to Nanpi.
  • 曹操 - attacker who takes the city and then manages its order.
  • 曹淳 - commander whose advice and pursuit decide the final phase.
  • 李孚 - surrendered local-trust broker who carries the post-capture order.
  • 王修 - former Yuan Tan adviser who requests permission to bury Yuan Tan after Nanpi.
  • 降人传令式安民 - post-capture order mechanism visible in the city.
