聂尚 / Nie Shang (Eastern Han)
Updated · 1 episodes · 1 show · 1 source notes
Overview
聂尚 / Nie Shang enters the wiki as the Shu commandery administrator who succeeds Deng Xun as Protector of the Qiang and fails quickly in a conciliation attempt toward Mi Tang. Hanji 767 uses him as the negative contrast to Deng’s accumulated frontier legitimacy.
Current Profile
Nie Shang’s policy is initially conciliatory. He sends an interpreter to bring Mi Tang back to the large and small Yu valleys; Mi Tang responds by sending his grandmother Bi Que to meet him. Nie then personally escorts her beyond the frontier barrier and sends the interpreter Tian Si with five people to escort her back to Qiang territory.
The apparent opening collapses. Mi Tang rebels again, kills Tian Si and the escorts with allied groups, and attacks Jincheng fort. Nie is punished and dismissed. The host describes the mistake as one-sided wishful thinking, compounded by unwillingness to accept Deng Xun’s standard and by a desire for quick credit.
Key Characteristics
- Shu commandery administrator appointed after Deng Xun as Protector of the Qiang.
- Conciliation-minded frontier official whose gesture toward Mi Tang lacks adequate trust testing.
- Sends Bi Que back under escort, creating a vulnerable party that Mi Tang later kills.
- Failure case where goodwill, speed, and credit seeking substitute for grounded frontier judgment.
- Negative foil to Deng Xun’s slower and deeper legitimacy with frontier communities.
Evidence
- Succession and policy: Hanji 767 says Nie Shang succeeds Deng Xun as Protector of the Qiang and plans conciliatory policy.
- Mi Tang contact: Hanji 767 says Nie sends an interpreter to summon Mi Tang back to the Yu valleys and receives Mi Tang’s grandmother Bi Que.
- Escort decision: Hanji 767 says Nie personally escorts Bi Que beyond the frontier and sends Tian Si with five others to escort her home.
- Collapse: Hanji 767 says Mi Tang rebels again, kills the escort party, attacks Jincheng, and causes Nie’s dismissal.
- Host judgment: Hanji 767 frames Nie’s mistake as one-sided wishful thinking and credit-hungry impatience.
Qualifications
Nie Shang’s profile is source-bounded to one failed Qiang-protector episode. Bi Que, Tian Si, exact escort details, and the source’s motive judgment remain bounded to Hanji 767 until corroborated by later source notes.
What Changed
- Created Nie Shang as the failed-conciliation successor to Deng Xun.
- Linked his case to frontier trust assessment rather than treating conciliation itself as the problem.
Relationships
- 邓训 - predecessor whose legitimacy Nie Shang fails to reproduce.
- 弥唐 - Qiang leader whose renewed rebellion destroys Nie’s policy.
- 烧当羌 - broader Mi Tang frontier group context.
- 一厢情愿式边疆怀柔 - concept abstracted from Nie’s failure.
- 查因安抚式治理 - contrast because durable pacification needs grounded conditions and trust.
- 善意的政治边界 - adjacent limit where goodwill without judgment creates exposure.
