Operation Anthropoid / 类人猿行动
Overview
Operation Anthropoid was the Czechoslovak government-in-exile and British-supported mission in which Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš fatally wounded Reinhard Heydrich in Prague in 1942.
Current Profile
The source presents the operation as a political and military signal rather than only a tactical strike. The exile government feared that occupation policy and wartime bargaining would weaken both domestic resistance and Czechoslovakia’s postwar claims. Local resisters nevertheless warned that killing Heydrich would bring overwhelming retaliation without dismantling the occupation apparatus.
The attack on 27 May succeeded through improvisation after the planned submachine-gun burst failed and Kubiš’s bomb exploded beside rather than inside the car. Heydrich died on 4 June. Betrayal then exposed support networks and the assassins’ Prague church refuge; the resulting siege, executions, and destruction of Lidice made the operation a durable symbol of resistance inseparable from collective punishment.
Key Characteristics
- Combined exile-government strategy with British training and local clandestine support.
- Used a Czech-Slovak pair of attackers with political as well as operational symbolism.
- Proceeded despite explicit local warnings about reprisals.
- Succeeded after weapon failure and battlefield improvisation.
- Removed a senior occupation official without removing the coercive institutions he led.
- Produced a national resistance memory shaped by courage, betrayal, siege, and civilian loss.

Qualifications
The source does not settle the counterfactual question of whether the political value justified predictable reprisals. Its casualty totals, causal account of Heydrich’s death, claim about the symbolic intent of pairing a Czech and a Slovak, and descriptions of commemoration remain episode-attributed.
