Operation Demetrius

Operation Demetrius appears in 699. The Troubles: Return of the IRA (Part 3) as the internment operation launched before dawn on 9 August 1971. British troops raided homes across Northern Ireland using outdated RUC intelligence files that did not properly distinguish the Official IRA from the Provisional IRA.

The episode says the operation arrested 342 people, all Catholics and no Protestants, then triggered riots, barricades, burned houses, mass displacement, and 17 deaths in gun battles with the British Army. It is the source’s sharpest case of Intelligence Failure Mass Arrest and Counterinsurgency Legitimacy Trap.
