Orville Nelson
Orville Nelson is the barber in How Black hair care grew Black power whose early hair-straightener formula became the starting point for Ultra Wave. The episode says his mixture included ingredients such as egg, potato, and sodium hydroxide, but it separated and did not work reliably enough for scalable retail.
The source uses Nelson to show that Johnson Products emerged from practical barbershop knowledge as well as formal business execution. George E. Johnson’s contribution was to observe Nelson’s product problem, experiment with emulsification and texture, and turn a local practice into a stable commercial product.
