Oswald the Lucky Rabbit
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is the early animated character that Walt Disney lost before creating Mickey Mouse. In The Walt Disney Company: Walt’s Era, Oswald becomes the decisive business lesson: Disney had made a hit character, but the customer/distributor relationship and ownership rights left him exposed.
The Oswald loss connects directly to IP Ownership. Charles Mintz and Universal used ownership of the character and agreements with Disney animators to weaken Walt’s bargaining position, after which Disney focused much more heavily on owning characters, controlling the brand, and reducing dependency on outside distributors.
