庞涓 / Pang Juan
庞涓 / Pang Juan appears in 《资治通鉴·周纪》16丨孙膑庞涓恩怨纠葛 桂陵之战 as 孙膑’s fellow student and betrayer. The episode says both men studied under 鬼谷子, but Pang Juan later becomes a 魏国 general and fears that his own ability is below Sun Bin’s.
Pang Juan’s source role is moral and narrative as much as military. He tricks Sun Bin into coming to Wei, has him falsely punished, and turns a talent rivalry into mutilation, humiliation, and confinement. The later 桂陵之战 branch is therefore presented not only as a Qi-Wei-Zhao campaign but also as the return of the strategist whom Wei had tried to break.
《资治通鉴·周纪》19丨马陵之战 moves Pang Juan into the 马陵之战 campaign. He attacks 韩国 for 魏国, is recalled when 齐国 threatens 大梁, and becomes the target of 孙膑’s plan to exploit Wei arrogance through rapid pursuit and forced-march exhaustion.
《资治通鉴·周纪》20丨庞涓死此树下 turns Pang Juan into the fatal misreader of 减灶诱敌. He sees the stove count drop over three days, concludes that Qi soldiers are fleeing, and shifts from planning victory to racing for contact before the enemy disappears. By leaving his slower main force and rushing with a smaller mobile force, he repeats the exposure pattern that Sun Bin is waiting for at Maling. The episode ends his arc with the torchlit ambush, his suicide, and the collapse of the Wei army around him.
