Quisquis

Overview

Quisquis was a senior northern Inca commander who resisted Pizarro’s advance toward Cusco, withdrew toward Quito with a depleted army, and was killed by his own officers after refusing peace.

Current Profile

647. The Fall of the Incas: The King in the North (Part 4) places Quisquis at the center of the military aftermath of the Inca civil war. His northern army had devastated Huascar-aligned areas around Jauja, and he continued to contest the Spanish-Cusco-faction advance after Atahualpa’s death. Even after Chalcuchima’s execution, Quisquis nearly stopped the invaders in a mountain-pass battle but withdrew when night ended the opportunity.

He then led a reported force of about twenty thousand battle-hardened but exhausted troops north. Arriving near Quito after Spanish-led forces had taken the capital, he rejected his officers’ request to seek peace, declared that he preferred starvation in the wilds to surrender, and was bludgeoned to death by his own commanders. His end makes morale and internal consent, not simply battlefield defeat, part of the northern collapse.

Key Characteristics

  • Senior commander of Atahualpa’s northern army.
  • Veteran of the Inca civil war and destruction in Huascar-aligned territory.
  • Persistent opponent of the Spanish advance and Manco’s Cusco faction.
  • Leader of a long northward retreat by an exhausted army.
  • Uncompromising resister killed after his officers lost confidence in continued war.

Evidence

Qualifications

The episode does not independently verify troop totals, attributed speech, the precise mountain battle, responsibility for earlier atrocities, or the circumstances of Quisquis’s death. His officers’ belief in Spanish invincibility is evidence of collapsing morale in this account, not proof that military resistance everywhere had become impossible.

What Changed

  • Created a profile linking civil-war victory, continued resistance, retreat, and command breakdown.

  • Francisco Pizarro - conquistador whose column Quisquis tried to stop before Cusco.
  • Spanish Conquest of Peru - conquest process in which his army represented continued northern resistance.
