任嚣 / Ren Xiao
任嚣 / Ren Xiao enters the wiki through Hanji 185 as the dying Qin Nanhai commandery officer who hands the Lingnan problem to 赵佗. The source says that under 胡亥 / 秦二世, Ren Xiao sees the Qin center collapsing under violence and rebellion, so he summons Zhao Tuo from Longchuan and urges him to use the far southern terrain as a separate political base.
His advice is concrete. Ren Xiao points to the Five Ridges routes, the mountains and sea around Nanhai and Panyu, and the distance from the Central Plains as conditions for self-preservation. He then appoints Zhao Tuo to manage 南海郡, giving Zhao the institutional opening that later becomes 南越.
Ren Xiao matters because he turns Qin’s earlier 百越 commandery expansion into a post-Qin succession problem. The same administrative frontier that Qin created through conquest becomes the base from which Zhao Tuo blocks passes, removes Qin-appointed officials, absorbs 桂林郡 and 象郡, and later has to be drawn into Han order through 陆贾’s mission.
