Overview

The Samnites / 萨莫奈人 are an Italian people whose conflict with Rome and special hostility to Lucius Cornelius Sulla / 苏拉 make them the final anti-Sullan army defeated at the Colline Gate.

Episode 702 places the Samnites inside the Social War / 同盟者战争 and Sulla’s rise. They are based in the Apennines east of the Bay of Naples, suffer heavily from Sulla’s reprisals, and remain associated with Italian resistance to Rome’s citizenship order.

Episode 704 turns that background into the last military crisis of the Sullan civil war. Because Sulla had been especially brutal against them, the Samnites become a major anti-Sullan reserve. They first try to relieve Gaius Marius Younger / 小马略 at Praeneste, then see Rome itself as undefended and march on the Colline Gate. Their commander is presented as wanting to destroy Rome, not simply change the government. Sulla and Marcus Licinius Crassus / 克拉苏 defeat them after a night battle, and the next day Sulla massacres thousands of prisoners at the Villa Publica.
