Second Triumvirate / 第二次三头同盟

Overview

The Second Triumvirate / 第二次三头同盟 is the legally empowered alliance of Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus that turns the failed settlement after the assassination of Caesar into organized military dictatorship.

Current Profile

305: The Fall of the Roman Republic presents the triumvirate as the reversal of Cicero / 西塞罗’s plan to use Octavian and the consular armies against Antony. After Antony retreats from Mutina, the consuls Hirtius and Pansa die, Antony joins Lepidus, and Octavian forces his election as consul. He then bargains with the men he had ostensibly opposed.

The alliance claims a five-year mandate, controls legislation without ordinary senatorial or popular independence, and brings martial rule into Rome. Its proscriptions are both political terror and war finance: enemies and wealthy citizens are listed for death, property is confiscated, and personal loyalties are traded across the alliance. Cicero’s killing is the episode’s defining example.

Key Characteristics

  • It joins three rival commanders through a shared need for power, money, and victory over Caesar’s assassins.
  • It converts armed bargaining into extraordinary legal authority rather than operating only as an informal pact.
  • It subordinates Senate and people while retaining the language and offices of Roman government.
  • Its proscriptions combine vengeance, fundraising, confiscation, and mutual sacrifice of protected individuals.
  • It prepares the western military coalition that defeats Brutus and Cassius at Philippi.
