Overview

莎车国 / Shache Kingdom is a Western Regions polity whose current wiki profile is defined by contested kingship and external control. Hanji 735 first shows Shache as the expansionary power under King Xian, occupying Khotan, Dawan, and Qiuci before a Khotan revolt and marriage settlement. Hanji 736 then shows Shache seized and reshaped by Khotan King Guangde under Northern Xiongnu counterpressure; Hanji 758 later shows Ban Chao defeating Shache through deception during Zhangdi’s reign.

Current Profile

Hanji 735 supplies the earliest current layer. King Xian occupies Khotan, Dawan, and Qiuci and stations governors, but Khotanese actors kill the Shache governor Junde and raise Xiumoba. Xian’s attack on Khotan is defeated, Xiumoba dies in pursuit, Guangde is installed, and the immediate settlement returns Guangde’s detained father and marries Xian’s daughter to Guangde.

Hanji 736 supplies the next current layer. Guangde of Khotan attacks Shache, lures and kills King Xian, and annexes the polity. Northern Xiongnu treats Khotan’s expansion as unacceptable, surrounds Khotan with Western Regions forces, and installs Xian’s hostage son Bujuzheng as Shache king.

The settlement does not last. Guangde later attacks again, kills Bujuzheng, and installs Bujuzheng’s younger brother Qili. The source therefore makes Shache a case where formal kingship is unstable because surrounding powers treat its ruler as a control point.

Hanji 758 adds a later military layer. During Zhangdi’s late reign, Ban Chao defeats Shache through false retreat and timing after the opposing relief force is split. This later note is not detailed enough to reconstruct all Shache alliances, but it shows the polity remaining central to Western Regions balance after the earlier Khotan-Xiongnu contest.

Key Characteristics

  • Western Regions polity that first appears as an expansionary power over Khotan, Dawan, and Qiuci.
  • Later becomes vulnerable to neighboring Khotan’s expansion.
  • Kingship is repeatedly reset through killing, hostage succession, and replacement.
  • Northern Xiongnu intervenes when Khotan’s control over Shache changes regional balance.
  • Later appears as an opponent in Ban Chao’s Western Regions campaigning.
  • Functions in the wiki as a contested control point rather than a stable independent actor.

Evidence

  • Shache expansion and Khotan revolt: Hanji 735 says King Xian controls Khotan, Dawan, and Qiuci before Khotan kills his governor Junde and raises Xiumoba.
  • Marriage settlement after reversal: Hanji 735 says Xian returns Guangde’s detained father and marries a daughter to Guangde after the Khotan counterattack.
  • Khotan seizure: Hanji 736 says Guangde lures and kills King Xian and annexes Shache.
  • Xiongnu king-making: Hanji 736 says Xiongnu installs Xian’s hostage son Bujuzheng as Shache king after pressuring Khotan.
  • Khotan replacement: Hanji 736 says Guangde later kills Bujuzheng and installs Qili.
  • Ban Chao campaign: Hanji 758 says Ban Chao defeats Shache through timing and false-retreat deception.

Qualifications

This page does not reconstruct Shache’s full dynastic sequence or geography. Hanji 735 adds King Xian’s expansion, Junde, Xiumoba, Dawan, Qiuci, and the marriage settlement, but these remain source-scoped until more source notes develop them. Xian, Bujuzheng, Qili, Wensu, Gumo, Weitou, and the exact coalition details remain source-scoped.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 735 as the earlier Shache expansion, Khotan revolt, and marriage-settlement layer.
  • Preserved Hanji 736’s Khotan-Xiongnu king-making branch and Hanji 758’s later Ban Chao campaign notice.

Relationships

  • 于阗国 - neighboring polity whose ruler seizes and reshapes Shache.
  • 于阗王广德 - attacker and king-maker in the earliest current layer.
  • 北匈奴 - outside power that counters Khotan and installs a hostage heir.
  • 班超 - later Han commander whose campaign defeats Shache.
  • 联盟裂解利用 - related military pattern used in the later Ban Chao source.
  • 领土控制更替 - broader pattern because Shache’s ruler and alignment change through repeated coercion.
