单超 / Shan Chao (late Han eunuch)
Updated · 3 episodes · 1 show · 3 source notes
Overview
单超 / Shan Chao is a Huan-era eunuch marquis whose profile now runs from 159 CE reward politics to active family protection and then 160 CE burial honor. Hanji 850 makes him one of the large post-梁冀 eunuch recipients criticized by 李云. Hanji 851 then shows him still being elevated while sick and protecting a kinship corruption field. Hanji 853 later records his death and lavish burial treatment.
Current Profile
Hanji 850 says Shan Chao is one of the eunuchs rewarded after Liang Ji’s fall. His grant is presented as especially large, and Li Yun folds the reward scale of the Five Marquises into a broader warning that court favor has outrun military and institutional balance.
Hanji 851 adds the active-power layer before his death. Although sick, Shan Chao is appointed Chariot-and-Cavalry General. His nephew 单匡 becomes a corrupt Jiyin administrator; 第五种 and 魏宇 expose the case; Shan Kuang hires 任芳 to kill Wei Yu; and 杨秉 is punished after asking to bring Shan Kuang to Luoyang. Shan Chao later uses 叔孙无忌’s disorder to frame Fifth Zhong, while his maternal grandson 董元 makes Fifth Zhong’s exile dangerous.
Hanji 853 then records Shan Chao’s death and burial. 汉桓帝 grants imperial coffin and clothing gifts, calls out Five Camps cavalry, and uses the construction office for the tomb. The same source says the remaining marquises become still more indulgent after his death, making Shan Chao a hinge between reward, protected-family power, and local predation.
Key Characteristics
- Huan-era eunuch marquis whose large post-Liang reward becomes part of Li Yun’s critique.
- Sick but elevated court favorite whose rank continues to rise in Hanji 851.
- Patronage source for Shan Kuang’s corruption, witness-suppression attempt, and failed confrontation.
- Retaliation actor who uses Shusun Wuji’s disorder to frame Fifth Zhong.
- Burial-status signal of continuing court favor after the Liang Ji crisis.
- Narrative hinge for the remaining marquises’ indulgence and arrogance.
Evidence
- Reward rank: Hanji 850 says Shan Chao receives an especially large household grant after Liang Ji’s fall.
- Criticized reward ecology: Hanji 850 says Li Yun criticizes the Five Marquises’ reward scale while warning that frontier soldiers lack comparable recognition.
- Sickbed elevation: Hanji 851 says the sick Shan Chao is appointed Chariot-and-Cavalry General.
- Protected nephew case: Hanji 851 ties Shan Chao to Shan Kuang’s Jiyin corruption and the report sent by Fifth Zhong and Wei Yu.
- Retaliation against Fifth Zhong: Hanji 851 says Shan Chao uses local disorder to frame Fifth Zhong and have him sent toward exile.
- Death and burial: Hanji 853 says Shan Chao dies and receives imperial coffin, clothing, cavalry, and tomb-building honors.
- Group consequence: Hanji 853 says the remaining four marquises become more indulgent after his death.
Qualifications
This page remains bounded to Hanji 850, Hanji 851, and Hanji 853. Hanji 851’s sick but active Shan Chao is not a contradiction of Hanji 853’s later death and burial. Shan Chao’s page should not absorb the entire Five Marquises chronology, but it now includes the Shan Kuang branch because the protection and retaliation flow directly through his family network.
What Changed
- Hanji 851 adds Shan Chao’s sickbed elevation, Shan Kuang protection, Fifth Zhong retaliation, and Dong Yuan exile-threat branch between Hanji 850 and Hanji 853.
- The page now treats Shan Chao as an active patronage shield before his burial becomes a status signal.
Relationships
- 桓帝五侯 - group context in which Shan Chao’s reward and death become politically meaningful.
- 汉桓帝 - ruler who grants Shan Chao rank and burial honors.
- 李云 - critic who treats Shan Chao’s reward ecology as politically dangerous.
- 单匡 - nephew whose corruption and witness suppression show Shan Chao’s family protection.
- 第五种 - inspector whom Shan Chao frames after the Shan Kuang report.
- 董元 - maternal grandson whose Shuofang office extends Shan Chao’s retaliation reach.
- 杨秉 - official punished after trying to confront Shan Kuang.
- 宦官庇护下的地方暴行 - concept strengthened by Shan Chao’s family-protection branch.
- 名器合法性 - concept adjacent to burial honors and court-granted rank signals.
