商山四皓 / Shangshan Sihao
商山四皓 / Shangshan Sihao enter the wiki through Hanji 189 as four elderly recluses who had avoided 刘邦 but appear publicly behind crown prince 刘盈 at a palace banquet.
Their source role is symbolic but decisive. Liu Bang says he had searched for them without success; they answer that his treatment of scholars drove them away, while Liu Ying’s仁孝 and respect for people attracted them. The episode uses this contrast to show that the crown prince has gained moral and reputational support that cannot be reduced to palace favoritism.
When the four leave with Liu Ying, Liu Bang tells 戚姬 / 戚夫人 that the crown prince’s wings are already formed. Shangshan Sihao therefore become the visible proof that the attempted replacement by 刘如意 has reached its limit: the heir now has a support network outside Liu Bang’s private preference.
