鄯善国 / Shanshan Kingdom is the Western Regions polity where Ban Chao’s 73 CE mission first converts an envoy visit into coercive allegiance reversal. In the current bounded corpus, Shanshan appears as a swing polity caught between Han and Northern Xiongnu envoy pressure.

Current Profile

Hanji 742 gives the only current Shanshan layer. Shanshan king Guang first receives Ban Chao and the Han party with full courtesy, then becomes cold after Northern Xiongnu envoys arrive. Ban Chao reads the change as evidence of divided allegiance and tests the inference by bluffing a local intermediary into admitting that the Xiongnu envoys have been present for three days and are lodged thirty li away.

The political outcome is decided outside formal diplomacy. Ban Chao imprisons the intermediary, gathers his thirty-six followers, excludes Guo Xun from planning because fear might leak the plan, and attacks the Xiongnu camp at night. Fire, drums, shouting, and ambush panic the Xiongnu side; the next day Ban Chao displays the envoys’ heads to Guang, explains Han authority, and compels Shanshan to stop dealing with Northern Xiongnu.

The current synthesis is that Shanshan is not portrayed as intrinsically loyal to either side. Its allegiance turns when the perceived stronger and more dangerous external actor changes. The hostage sent to Han after Ban Chao’s strike makes Shanshan an early case of frontier allegiance being bound by both fear and visible commitment.

The king Guang, Guo Xun, and the exact Xiongnu casualty numbers remain source-scoped because Hanji 742 is the only current bounded source for them.
