Overview

师子 / Shizi was a Southern Xiongnu aristocrat and later chanyu whose current page begins with his survival of An Guo’s jealous plot. He represents the problem of subordinate or collateral success inside a fragile hierarchy.

Current Profile

Hanji 768 identifies Shizi as the son of the earlier chanyu Xuan. He had served as right guli king and then left wise king, was brave and strategic, and enjoyed respect from former chanyus, the Han court, and Southern Xiongnu people. When An Guo plotted to kill him, Huangfu Leng protected him by keeping him from court meetings; after An Guo’s failed attack and death, Shizi was installed as chanyu.
