Overview

Shule Kingdom is a Western Regions polity whose current wiki profile now begins with Ban Chao’s 74 CE reversal of a Qiuci-backed regime change. Later layers show Ban Chao’s recall crisis, another crisis or compressed crisis before his whole-Western-Regions strategy, intervention after Wang Zhong’s defection, succession and regional balancing under Northern Xiongnu pressure, and eventual military resistance against Meng Tuo’s failed attack.

Current Profile

Hanji 743 supplies the earliest current layer. Qiuci king Jian, backed by Xiongnu power, kills the Shule king and installs Duti, a non-Shule subject, in Pantuo. Ban Chao sends Tian Lu to arrest Duti, gathers Shule officials, denounces Qiuci, and installs Zhong from the previous Shule royal line. The source makes Shule’s local legitimacy central: Duti’s non-Shule identity weakens him, while Zhong’s royal-line status lets Han intervention appear as restoration rather than naked annexation.

Hanji 747 gives the next crisis. When the court recalls Ban Chao and abolishes Western Regions offices, Shule is frightened enough that its Han-side duwei Li kills himself. After Ban Chao leaves, two Shule cities defect toward Qiuci and Wutou. Ban Chao returns to Shule, kills the rebels, defeats Wutou, and restores stability, making Shule a theater for mission-driven frontier responsibility.

Hanji 705-4 supplies a compact strategic bridge before Ban Chao’s 80 CE memorial. It says Shule is besieged and that an internal military officer tries to sell the city to the enemy; Ban Chao arrives, suppresses the betrayal, stabilizes the situation, and then moves from emergency repair to an overall Western Regions strategy. The source does not identify the officer, so the page treats this as a source-bounded crisis layer rather than a new named actor.

Hanji 754 then shows Shule as a recoverable but internally divisible local base. Ban Chao raises Shule troops for a campaign against Shache, but Shache bribes the Shule king Wang Zhong, who defects and holds Wujicheng. Ban Chao installs a Shule deputy as king, attacks Wang Zhong with Shule troops that had not defected, and has Kangju seize and return Wang Zhong before Wujicheng surrenders.

Hanji 790 later shows Shule as an active regional actor before Han’s renewed Western Regions debate. After King Anguo dies without a son, local actors first install Yifu, the son of Anguo’s maternal uncle. Later, because the nearby Yuezhi/Yueshi-associated state is close to Chen Pan, Chen Pan is installed as king. The episode also says Shache defects from Khotan to Shule, making Shule strong enough to balance Qiuci and Khotan.

Hanji 897 then presents Shule as the Western Regions target whose defense exposes Meng Tuo’s command limits. Meng Tuo sends a force built from Dunhuang troops, Han frontier offices, and allied Western Regions kingdoms against Shule, but after more than forty days the army cannot take Zhenzhong city and withdraws.

The page remains source-scoped rather than a complete Shule history. Hanji 743 does not promote Duti, Tian Lu, Pantuo, or Qiuci king Jian into standalone pages from this source alone. Hanji 747 does not promote duwei Li, Wutou, or the two defecting cities into standalone pages. Hanji 705-4 does not identify the officer who tries to sell the city or settle whether this is a separate crisis or compressed retelling of adjacent Shule instability. The Hanji 754 Wujicheng, Kangju, and Shache details are kept source-scoped; the minor Hanji 790 succession figures Yifu and Chen Pan are preserved without inferring a broader genealogy. The page also does not merge Shule into Khotan or Qiuci pages beyond explicit alignment relationships.
