Sinocism
Sinocism is the China-focused newsletter by Bill Bishop that became Substack’s first real user case in Founder Mode: Chris Best, Founder & CEO, Substack. In Chris Best’s account, Bishop already had an audience and wanted to charge for the newsletter, but needed publishing, email, and payment infrastructure connected.
The first-day revenue result, about $100,000 in the source’s account, gave Substack a concrete early proof point. It also came with a caveat: Best says Sinocism remained the biggest customer for years, so the launch proved demand could exist but did not make customer acquisition easy.
