Sonalight

Sonalight was the voice-control app Spenser Skates and Curtis Liu took through Y Combinator Winter 2012 before pivoting to Amplitude. In Spenser Skates, Founder & CEO, Amplitude, the app let Android phones listen in the background so users could send and receive texts by voice.

The source uses Sonalight as a Technical Demo Retention Gap case. The Demo Day pocket-phone demonstration generated excitement, but real users often tried the app once or twice and did not return. The founders found that a successful first voice-recognition match correlated with better retention, but they could not directly improve the underlying recognition because they depended on an unauthorized Google API.
