Stefan Szymanski

Stefan Szymanski appears in How to win a penalty shootout (with game theory) as the economist explaining why soccer penalties are not simply a test of technical shooting skill. He says penalty takers usually have a stronger side and a weaker side, but always choosing the stronger side lets the goalkeeper exploit the pattern.

His role is to make Mixed Strategy concrete. The source uses his explanation to show why a rational player may need to choose a less comfortable option some of the time, and why real penalty preparation must go beyond the simplified left-right model into height, placement, and psychology.
