SynthID appears in Unraveling the complex knot of an AI-generated hoax as the watermarking signal that helped Casey Newton identify a suspicious employee badge as AI-generated. In the source, Gemini reports that the badge image was generated in whole or in part with Gemini, giving Newton evidence that the source was trying to deceive him.

The page’s wiki role is concrete provenance infrastructure. Unlike a broad standard such as Content Credentials, SynthID is presented here as a model-provider watermark/detection path that can reduce part of the AI Reality Verification Tax when journalists or platforms can query it and interpret the result.
