Overview

The Taira Clan is the defeated ruling-warrior enemy in 661. Dawn of the Samurai: The Shogun Triumphant (Part 4), where its naval strength and courtly prestige are broken by Minamoto no Yoshitsune during the Genpei War.

The episode presents the Taira as powerful at sea and tied to the old courtly order. After losing Kyoto, they rely on island and coastal strongholds around Shikoku, Kyushu, Yashima, Ichinotani, and the Inland Sea, carrying the child emperor Antoku and the imperial regalia with them.

Their end at Dan-no-ura is both military defeat and cultural memory. Antoku’s drowning, mass suicide, Kenreimon-in’s survival, Munemori’s capture, and later Heikegani legend turn the clan’s collapse into one of the episode’s central samurai memory scenes.
