entity

Overview

堂邑父 / Tangyi Fu is the Xiongnu-origin guide and interpreter assigned to 张骞’s first mission toward 月氏. The current evidence gives him a direct sustainment role when provisions fail and identifies him as the only named companion who returns to Han with Zhang after the mission’s repeated captivity and reported attrition.

Current Profile

Hanji 287 places Tangyi Fu inside an expedition that must combine language, enemy-territory knowledge, navigation, and improvised subsistence. His presence shows that the mission is not carried by imperial authorization alone: it depends on portable local knowledge and survival skill before formal diplomacy can begin.

The party nevertheless suffers losses and is captured by Xiongnu cavalry. The source therefore supports an enabling rather than outcome-determinative profile: Tangyi Fu reduces some uncertainty and scarcity but cannot erase terrain, distance, surveillance, or military interception.

Hanji 287 part 2 says that after the failed Yuezhi alliance and a second Xiongnu capture, only Tangyi Fu and Zhang return from the original party of more than one hundred. Han Wudi then grants Tangyi Fu the title 奉使君. The episode does not explain his separate actions during the later stages, so survival and recognition extend his profile without making him co-designer of the diplomacy.

Key Characteristics

  • Xiongnu-origin member of a Han diplomatic expedition.
  • Guide and interpreter for Zhang Qian’s first western mission.
  • Hunter whose skill supplies food after carried provisions run out.
  • Operational intermediary who links language, route knowledge, and field survival.
  • Reported co-survivor of the thirteen-year mission and recipient of imperial recognition on return.

Evidence

Guide and interpreter:

  • Hanji 287 says Han Wudi assigns Tangyi Fu to Zhang Qian’s party as guide and translator.

Field sustainment:

  • Hanji 287 says the party relies on his archery and hunting when its dry provisions are exhausted.

Return and recognition:

  • Hanji 287 part 2 identifies Tangyi Fu and Zhang as the two returnees and says Tangyi Fu is rewarded as 奉使君.

Qualifications

This profile is bounded to two podcast installments. Tangyi Fu’s status, name rendering, language ability, route expertise, precise hunting contribution, conduct during captivity, survival sequence, title, and subsequent life are not independently established here. His assistance does not prove that the mission had reliable maps, adequate provisions, or control over its route, while being one of two reported returnees does not by itself establish an equal diplomatic role.

What Changed

  • Added Tangyi Fu’s reported return as the mission’s only other named survivor and his reward as 奉使君.
  • Preserved the distinction between his operational support and Zhang Qian’s diplomatic leadership.

Relationships

  • 张骞 - mission leader whom Tangyi Fu guides and interprets for.
  • 月氏 - intended destination of the expedition.
  • 匈奴 - Tangyi Fu’s reported origin and the power whose territory the mission attempts to cross.
  • 被扣使者的使命延续 - later mission condition after the party’s capture.
