《鼻子》 / The Nose
《鼻子》 / The Nose is an [[AkutagawaRyunosuke|芥川龙之介]] story discussed in 17.地狱变:众生皆苦,一念入魔, and also one of the Akutagawa works the episode says [[LuXun|鲁迅]] translated early. The story follows a monk with an unusually long nose whose attempt to become ordinary only changes the way others laugh at him.
The episode uses the story as social psychology rather than only grotesque comedy. Public ridicule, pity, envy, and relief all depend on the nose remaining available as a social object; when the nose changes, the crowd’s emotional balance changes too.
