Throckmorton Plot
The Throckmorton Plot appears in 694. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: A Treacherous Conspiracy (Part 4) as the 1583 Catholic conspiracy linking foreign invasion, English Catholic support, and Mary, Queen of Scots’ claim against Elizabeth I. Its continental planning centered on Henry, Duke of Guise, Catholic exiles such as William Allen, papal support, Philip II’s money, and diplomatic support from Bernardino de Mendoza.
The plan called for a main landing in northwest England, especially Catholic Lancashire, and a smaller landing in Sussex. Francis Throckmorton served as the English link among Mary, London conspirators, Paris conspirators, and embassy channels.
Francis Walsingham’s network exposed the plot through embassy penetration, copied cipher correspondence, and surveillance of Throckmorton. The plot’s failure led to Throckmorton’s execution, Mendoza’s expulsion, tighter controls on Mary, and the Bond of Association.
