Overview

Tlaxcala was an Indigenous Mesoamerican polity whose leaders received the survivors of the Noche Triste and chose to renew their alliance with Hernan Cortes against the Mexica Empire.

Current Profile

The episode treats Tlaxcala as an independent strategic actor, not a passive Spanish auxiliary. After the shattered column retreats toward Tlaxcalan territory, the new Mexica ruler Cuitlahuac urges Tlaxcala to destroy the survivors. Xicotencatl the younger reportedly favors that course, while his father supports continued cooperation as a way to break Mexica power. Tlaxcalans feed and treat the defeated Spaniards and then supply the renewed campaign with political backing, warriors, labor, and logistical depth.

The alliance remains mutually instrumental and unequal in its later memory. Indigenous allies outnumber Spaniards in the campaign, and Tlaxcalan porters carry brigantine components overland, yet Cortes reduces their causal role in his own narrative. Smallpox also kills heavily in Tlaxcala, showing that alliance did not protect the polity from the biological catastrophe of conquest.

Key Characteristics

  • Autonomous Indigenous polity pursuing advantage against Mexica power.
  • Divided leadership faced with a real choice between destroying Cortes’s survivors and renewing alliance.
  • Provider of refuge, food, treatment, warriors, porters, and a territorial base for the renewed campaign.
  • Numerically central coalition partner whose role was minimized in Spanish-centered accounts.
  • Community severely affected by smallpox despite its alliance with the Spaniards.

Qualifications

This profile is bounded to one campaign episode and does not reconstruct Tlaxcala’s government, internal factions, earlier relations with the Mexica, or later colonial history. The dialogue, factional motives, and claimed mortality fraction are source-scoped. “Alliance” does not imply shared goals, equal power, or freedom from later Spanish domination, and “Tlaxcalans” should not flatten disagreement among leaders and communities.

What Changed

  • Established Tlaxcala as the political hinge between the Noche Triste and renewed invasion.
  • Centered Indigenous logistical and numerical agency while preserving internal disagreement and epidemic harm.

Relationships

  • Hernan Cortes - defeated ally whom Tlaxcalan leaders chose to support again.
  • Cuitlahuac - Mexica ruler who reportedly tried to detach Tlaxcala from the Spanish alliance.
  • Mexica (Aztec) Empire - regional rival whose defeat offered Tlaxcala strategic opportunity.
  • Noche Triste - disaster after which Tlaxcala’s decision determined whether the coalition survived.
  • Siege of Tenochtitlan - campaign supplied by Tlaxcalan warriors, transport, and political support.
  • Columbian Exchange - process through which smallpox devastated Tlaxcala as well as its enemies.
