Treaty of Nonsuch

The Treaty of Nonsuch appears in 695. Elizabeth I vs The Catholics: The Shadow War (Part 5) as the 20 August 1585 agreement between Elizabeth I and the Dutch rebels. The episode calls it the first treaty between the future Dutch Republic and a foreign power.

The treaty is the source’s key strategic intervention threshold. Elizabeth refuses sovereignty over the Low Countries, but agrees to send infantry, cavalry, and Robert Dudley / Earl of Leicester as commander while accepting cautionary towns.

For Sir Philip Sidney, the treaty creates a path from frustrated courtly ambition into command. He helps prepare the agreement, is admired by Dutch envoys, has his Flushing appointment briefly reversed, tries to join Francis Drake, and is then sent to Flushing after all.
