Twitter / X

Twitter appears in the wiki as a social platform, distribution gatekeeper, and startup-context surface. In Founder Mode: Chris Best, Founder & CEO, Substack, Chris Best treats Twitter as a major upstream discovery platform for Substack writers and as the platform controlled by Elon Musk during Substack’s launch of Substack Notes.

Best’s account makes Twitter a direct Platform Dependency Risk case. Substack creators could publish and charge on Substack, but readers often found them through Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or other networks. Best says that after Substack launched a Twitter-like product, Twitter restricted visibility for posts containing “Substack,” impaired search for the term, and slowed Substack links; he also says the company impact was limited because Twitter traffic dependence had already declined.

Twitter also appears elsewhere as part of the social-web environment. In Paul Buchheit on Gmail, Google, FriendFeed, and Startup Judgment, FriendFeed struggled partly because its social aggregation product overlapped with Facebook and Twitter and sometimes depended on Twitter outages for growth. In Steve Huffman on Reddit’s Origin Story, Sale, and Return, Reddit is discussed against larger social and link-sharing competitors, including Twitter and Facebook as platforms whose mistakes smaller platforms could observe.
