宛县 / Wan County enters the wiki through Qinji 136 as the 南阳郡 center where the Qin commandery governor retreats after defeat by 刘邦. Liu Bang initially wants to bypass it and continue west, but 张良 warns that leaving a strong rear city could trap the army between Wan and Qin forces ahead.

Liu Bang accepts Zhang Liang’s advice, turns back at night, and surrounds Wan by morning. The crisis inside the city then produces 陈恢’s proposal: rather than force a costly assault or leave a dangerous enemy behind, Liu Bang can accept surrender, reward the governor, and keep moving toward 关中 under 怀王之约.

The surrender of Wan becomes the episode’s turning point from pure anti-Qin vengeance toward pacification. After Wan, nearby cities and people are said to join Liu Bang more readily because his army does not continue indiscriminate plunder or killing.
