王常 / Wang Chang (Xiajiang, Gengshi era)
Updated · 1 episodes · 1 show · 1 source notes
Overview
王常 / Wang Chang (Xiajiang, Gengshi era) is the Xiajiang-side leader in Hanji 662 who helps convert 刘縯’s post-defeat coalition appeal into accepted cooperation. He is deliberately disambiguated from later same-romanization figures 王昌 / Wang Chang and 王畅 / Wang Chang (Shumao).
Current Profile
Hanji 662 places Wang Chang after Xiajiang troops have been beaten by Yan You and Chen Mao but remain active around Louxi and later Yiqiu. Liu Yan arrives with 刘秀 and Li Tong to seek cooperation after Xiaochang’an has damaged morale among the Han, New Market, and Pinglin forces.
Wang Chang functions as the hinge between personal negotiation and wider coalition acceptance. He hears Liu Yan’s cooperation proposal, accepts the argument that 王莽 has lost popular support and that Liu-family restoration matches public feeling, and then persuades Cheng Dan and 张卬 / Zhang Ang despite their reluctance to be directed by another force. His contribution is therefore not only command; it is legitimacy translation inside a loose anti-Xin coalition.
The current evidence leaves Wang Chang source-scoped to this coalition-building scene. His later career, precise office, and full Xiajiang command structure are not reconstructed here.
Key Characteristics
- Xiajiang-side representative who meets Liu Yan during the post-Xiaochang’an coalition crisis.
- Accepts the anti-Wang-Mang and Liu-restoration argument as a reason for joint action.
- Persuades reluctant Xiajiang peers Cheng Dan and Zhang Ang to cooperate.
- Helps turn a demoralized field into a unified coalition capable of the Lanxiang night attack.
- Disambiguated Gengshi-era figure separate from later 王昌 and 王畅 routes.
Evidence
- Meeting with Liu Yan: Hanji 662 says Liu Yan, Liu Xiu, and Li Tong go to the Xiajiang camp after the Xiaochang’an defeat and Wang Chang is chosen to meet them.
- Restoration argument: Hanji 662 says Wang Chang is moved by Liu Yan’s sincerity and frames Wang Mang as unpopular while Liu-family restoration fits public feeling.
- Peer persuasion: Hanji 662 says Wang Chang returns to persuade Cheng Dan and Zhang Ang when they resist being directed by others.
- Coalition outcome: Hanji 662 says Xiajiang troops then join Liu Yan’s side, make an oath, rest, and participate in the six-route night attack on Lanxiang.
Qualifications
Hanji 662 supports Wang Chang’s role as a Xiajiang coalition persuader, but it does not supply a complete biography or settle his later career. Cheng Dan, Zhang Ang’s precise Xiajiang command position, Li Tong’s role in the visit, exact troop numbers, and Lanxiang operational details remain source-scoped.
What Changed
- Created a disambiguated Gengshi-era Wang Chang route for the Xiajiang coalition actor.
- Kept this evidence separate from later Wang Chang/Wang Chang Shumao pages with the same romanization.
Relationships
- 刘縯 - coalition initiator whose proposal Wang Chang accepts and transmits to Xiajiang peers.
- 刘秀 - participant in the Xiajiang visit after the earlier spoils crisis and Xiaochang’an defeat.
- 张卬 / Zhang Ang - Xiajiang peer whom Wang Chang helps persuade toward cooperation.
- 王莽 - common enemy whose loss of popular support anchors Wang Chang’s argument.
- 早期复汉联盟整合 - concept relationship because Wang Chang converts restoration legitimacy into coalition acceptance.
- 王昌 / Wang Chang - separate later Hanji 986 figure not merged with this route.
- 王畅 / Wang Chang (Shumao) - separate late-Han official not merged with this route.
