成都侯王商 / Wang Shang (Western Han Wang Clan)
Updated · 5 episodes · 1 show · 5 source notes
Overview
成都侯王商 / Wang Shang is the Wang-family outer relative who appears as a later Chengdi-era powerholder, protector, accuser, disaster-pressure officeholder, and luxury transgressor. He is distinct from 乐昌侯王商, the chancellor who conflicts with 王凤 in Hanji 515.
Current Profile
The bounded sources present this Wang Shang through changing uses of Wang-family power. In Hanji 533, Chengdi gives him staff and recommendation authority as a possible counterweight to 王音, but 杜邺 helps turn rivalry into consultation. In Hanji 538, he warns 谷永 to flee after a severe remonstrance angers Chengdi.
The same figure is not consistently protective. Hanji 541 has him impeach 陈汤 in the Changling conflict. Hanji 545 makes him first a disaster-pressure casualty and then a restored Da Sima and Wei General. Hanji 527-1 adds luxury crossing palace, city-wall, and public-infrastructure boundaries, followed by staged submission under threat.
Key Characteristics
- Chengdu Hou and Wang-family outer relative, distinct from the Lechang Hou chancellor of the same name.
- Internal Wang-family counterweight whose rivalry with Wang Yin becomes consultation.
- Hidden protector who warns Gu Yong during an imperial arrest order.
- Accuser who impeaches Chen Tang in the Changling case.
- Senior officeholder removed under disaster pressure and later restored.
- Luxury transgressor whose household project crosses public and imperial boundaries.
Evidence
Internal balancing and protection:
- Hanji 533 gives Wang Shang staff, troop, and recommendation authority and says Wang Yin later consults him sincerely.
- Hanji 538 says Wang Shang secretly warns Gu Yong to flee.
Accusation and disaster pressure:
- Hanji 541 says Wang Shang impeaches Chen Tang amid Changling interest conflict.
- Hanji 545 says he is removed after clustered disasters and restored after renewed anomalies weaken the earlier blame logic.
Luxury and submission:
- Hanji 527-1 says he considers using Mingguang Palace and cuts through Chang’an’s wall for a private water project.
- Hanji 527-1 says Wang-family relatives answer Chengdi’s threat with a staged awaiting-punishment posture.
Qualifications
This page preserves the five sources formerly mixed with the chancellor’s evidence. They do not reconstruct the Chengdu Hou’s complete office chronology, kinship biography, medical history, motives, or every same-name reference. Hanji 515 establishes that the earlier chancellor was not Wang Feng’s brother; chronology and Wang-family context support routing these later Da Sima, Five Marquises, and maternal-uncle layers here.
What Changed
- Split the Wang-family Chengdu Hou from 乐昌侯王商, correcting the prior merged identity.
- Preserved the existing five-source evidence inventory without adding Hanji 515, which concerns the other Wang Shang.
Relationships
- 王音 - Wang-family counterpart whose sincere consultation defuses the designed rivalry.
- 杜邺 - mediator who helps repair the Wang Shang-Wang Yin relationship.
- 谷永 - remonstrant whom Wang Shang warns to flee.
- 陈汤 - Changling actor whom Wang Shang impeaches.
- 汉成帝 - ruler who empowers, disciplines, removes, and restores him across the sources.
- 王政君 - senior Wang-family authority in the outer-relative power field.
- 真诚共治式冲突降温 - pattern illustrated by consultation with Wang Yin.
- 待刑谢罪式政治表演 - submission tactic in the Wang-family luxury crisis.
- 灾异压力转移 - personnel-pressure pattern behind removal and restoration.
