魏驹 / Wei Ju
Overview
Wei Ju is the Wei-house leader who first concedes land to Zhi Yao on Ren Zhang’s advice, then moves from Zhi Yao’s Jinyang coalition to the secret Wei-Han-Zhao counteralliance.
Current Profile
When Zhi Yao demands territory without justification, Wei Ju initially wants to refuse. Ren Zhang persuades him that concession will increase Zhi Yao’s arrogance and carelessness while aligning the coerced houses; Wei Ju therefore gives up a large city as a calculated delay. He later helps Zhi Yao besiege Zhao, but the water attack and Zhi Yao’s remark about destroying states make Anyi’s vulnerability concrete. He and Han Hu recognize the danger before Zhang Mengtan approaches them; the envoy succeeds by giving their existing fear a shared strategic formula. Wei Ju accepts the secrecy risk and joins the flank attack after Zhao reverses the flood.
Key Characteristics
- Nominal ally whose cooperation rests on coercion rather than durable trust.
- Accepts a near-term territorial loss to worsen the aggressor’s long-term strategic position.
- Reads a successful weapon as a future threat to his own base.
- Communicates suspicion covertly with Han Hu before open negotiation.
- Accepts a high-risk reversal when self-preservation incentives align.
Evidence
- Threat recognition: the episode says Wei Ju reacts when Zhi Yao connects water with state destruction because the Fen River could threaten Anyi. Zhouji 03
- Calculated concession: Zhouji 02 has Ren Zhang persuade Wei Ju that an unjustified grant will make Zhi Yao overconfident and the threatened houses more cohesive. Zhouji 02
- Secret alliance and battle action: Zhang Mengtan secures his agreement, after which Wei and Han attack Zhi’s disordered force from both sides. Zhouji 03
Qualifications
This profile is based on two consecutive podcast retellings. Dialogue, gestures, city size, precise motives, and the claim about Anyi’s hydraulic exposure remain source-scoped. Territorial concession can buy time without guaranteeing that the later coalition will form.
What Changed
- Added the prior territorial demand and Ren Zhang’s deliberate-overconfidence rationale.
Relationships
- 韩康子 / Han Kangzi - co-conspirator and partner in the flank attack.
- 张孟谈 / Zhang Mengtan - envoy who formalizes the reversal.
- 智瑶 / Zhi Yao - coalition leader whom Wei Ju helps destroy.
- 赵襄子 / Zhao Xiangzi - former target who becomes a survival partner.
- Threat-Driven Alliance Reversal / 威胁感驱动的同盟反转 - mechanism explaining the change of side.
- Strategic Indulgence for Overextension / 姑辅式诱导过度扩张 - explains the earlier decision to concede land.
