Overview

卫律 / Wei Lü is a former Han envoy who enters Xiongnu service and becomes the coercive intermediary in 苏武’s detention story. Hanji 376-1 supplies his defection background, role as the target of 虞常’s plot, investigation, and surrender threats; Hanji 398 later preserves 李陵’s moral pairing of himself with Wei Lü as men compromised beside Su Wu’s refusal.

Current Profile

Hanji 376-1 presents Wei Lü as a frontier intermediary created by failed return. After serving as a Han envoy to Xiongnu, he learns that the family of his associate Li Yannian has been arrested and does not return to Chang’an. He instead enters Xiongnu service, receives rank, and becomes useful to the chanyu.

That new position makes him both target and enforcer. Yu Chang proposes killing him, but after the plot fails the chanyu assigns Wei Lü to investigate. Wei Lü helps keep Su Wu alive after his self-stabbing, then executes Yu Chang, threatens Zhang Sheng into surrender, and tries to extend deputy guilt to Su Wu. His role joins practical rescue with political coercion: preserving Su Wu’s body serves the larger attempt to secure the mission’s submission.

Hanji 398 gives the later moral afterlife rather than a new event sequence. Li Ling recognizes Su Wu’s righteousness and places both himself and Wei Lü on the guilty side of the contrast.

Key Characteristics

  • Former Han envoy who avoids return after Li Yannian’s family falls and enters Xiongnu service.
  • Xiongnu-ranked intermediary whose cross-border background makes him useful to the chanyu.
  • Intended target of Yu Chang’s killing plan and later investigator of the failed plot.
  • Saves or stabilizes Su Wu after self-stabbing while continuing the effort to force surrender.
  • Executes Yu Chang, threatens Zhang Sheng, and argues that Su Wu should share the deputy’s guilt.
  • Later appears in Li Ling’s moral self-condemnation as another surrendered figure contrasted with Su Wu.

Evidence

  • Defection background: Hanji 376-1 says Wei Lü does not return to Han after hearing of Li Yannian’s family crisis and is later favored and ranked by the chanyu.
  • Plot and investigation: Hanji 376-1 makes Wei Lü the intended victim of Yu Chang’s plan and the official assigned to investigate after it fails.
  • Rescue and coercion: Hanji 376-1 says Wei Lü urgently obtains treatment after Su Wu stabs himself, then uses execution and sword threats to force the mission toward surrender.
  • Moral contrast: Hanji 398 says Li Ling treats both himself and Wei Lü as guilty beside Su Wu’s righteousness.

Qualifications

These compact podcast sources do not reconstruct Wei Lü’s complete biography, exact title, later Xiongnu career, relationship with Li Yannian, motives for defection, or every stage of the coercion directed at Su Wu. His emergency aid to Su Wu is not treated as proof of sympathy because the same source places it inside an active surrender campaign.

What Changed

  • Created a profile joining Hanji 376-1’s defection, investigation, rescue, and coercion with Hanji 398’s later moral contrast.

Relationships

  • 苏武 - chief envoy whom Wei Lü preserves physically and pressures politically.
  • 虞常 - plotter who targets Wei Lü and is later investigated and executed by him.
  • 张胜 - deputy whom Wei Lü threatens into surrender.
  • 李陵 - later surrendered Han officer who pairs his own guilt with Wei Lü’s.
  • 匈奴 - receiving polity that gives Wei Lü rank and uses him as an intermediary.
