Wei Ran
魏冉 / Wei Ran appears in 《资治通鉴·周纪》59丨一朝君王一朝臣 at the end of the episode’s Qin succession notice. After 秦武王 dies without a son, his brothers struggle for the throne, and Wei Ran uses forceful measures to make his nephew Ying Ji succeed as 秦昭襄王.
Wei Ran is made general and guards 咸阳, then suppresses 嬴壮’s revolt by killing or eliminating rebel princes, officials, and followers. The purge also reaches 惠文后 and Qin Wuwang’s wife, making Wei Ran the coercive arm of 芈八子 / 宣太后’s early court.
The episode also gives him a structural role: under a young Qin Zhaoxiang Wang, Xuan Taihou hands major power to Wei Ran, who becomes feared throughout Qin. He therefore anchors 楚系外戚政治 as more than maternal influence; the kin bloc has armed force, office, and purge capacity.
The episode says the Tongjian notice that 楼缓 immediately replaced 樗里疾 / 樗里子 as Qin chancellor is likely wrong; following 《史记》, it places Wei Ran as the successor around 300 BCE, then 孟尝君 / 田文 in 298 BCE, Lou Huan in 297 BCE, and Wei Ran again in 295 BCE. Wei Ran therefore appears not only as regency enforcer but as the stronger candidate for the immediate post-Chulizi Qin chancellorship.
(1) gives the 295 BCE endpoint of that office sequence as an annalistic notice: 秦国 removes 楼缓 as chancellor and appoints Wei Ran. The episode does not develop the Qin court politics further, but it confirms Wei Ran’s return to the office inside the same year as Zhao’s Shaqiu prelude.
《资治通鉴·周纪》67丨战国“灭霸”白起的军事才能究竟如何 makes Wei Ran the patron who recommends 白起 for the 伊阙之战 command. The episode also records Wei Ran’s temporary resignation and return, his later Ranghou title, and a source-critical correction: 陶 / 定陶 should not yet be treated as a Qin-held fief at the annalistic moment when 《资治通鉴》 places the notice.
《资治通鉴·周纪》76丨谁给了楚顷襄王的自信? adds another office notice: in 281 BCE, while 秦昭襄王 is again attacking 赵国, Qin appoints Wei Ran as chancellor again. The episode does not develop the court politics behind the appointment, but it keeps Wei Ran in the recurring cycle of resignation, restoration, and Qin military momentum.
《资治通鉴·周纪》82丨大秦的核武器:白起来了! gives Wei Ran a direct campaign role in 275 BCE. After 白起 has turned from 楚国 toward 魏国, Wei Ran attacks Wei twice in one year: first defeating a Han relief force and forcing eight cities from Wei, then defeating 芒卯 and pushing Wei into another territorial concession. The episode presents him as the political-military follow-through to Qin’s effort to discipline 魏安釐王 and manage the route problem created by Chu’s strategic depth.
《资治通鉴·周纪》83丨诸侯摆烂竟成了经典计中计? gives Wei Ran the decision point in 韩国’s appeal for help during 华阳之战. The Han envoy’s 投敌威胁式求援 works because Wei Ran recognizes that non-intervention could let 魏国 and 赵国 absorb Han’s position. He then moves with 白起 and Hu Yang, turning Han’s rescue into another Qin punishment of Wei.
(1) makes Wei Ran’s power more openly self-interested. In the episode, he recommends 客卿灶 / 客卿造 to attack 齐国 and take Gang and Shou, but the host argues that the campaign is costly and remote for 秦国 while useful for enlarging Wei Ran’s 陶 / 定陶 fief. The case turns Wei Ran from a powerful Qin operator into the source example for 以国战扩私邑, setting up why 范雎 can later appear as his political counterweight.
Fan Ju tells 秦昭襄王 that Qin has no real king, only 宣太后 and Wei Ran, then criticizes the Qi campaign as the wrong strategic direction. Wei Ran therefore becomes both the court-power obstacle and the policy-error case behind Qin should not cross Han and Wei to fight distant Qi for gains it cannot easily keep.
Fan Ju singles Wei Ran out as a figure able to dispatch envoys, influence war decisions, and fill the court and attendants with his own people. The episode makes him the most developed member of 秦国四贵权力结构: his private gains can be wrapped in public war while Qin absorbs the cost.
He is stripped of office and sent back to 陶 / 定陶, with a massive convoy whose private wealth underscores the earlier criticism that he had outgrown normal ministerial bounds. The host notes 司马迁’s sympathy for Wei Ran’s Qin accomplishments but does not fully accept it, arguing that a minister who forgets ruler-minister limits cannot be treated as simply wronged.
(1) repeats Wei Ran’s removal as part of Qin’s 265 BCE internal reset. The source uses that reset to move from the four-nobles problem into succession stabilization through 安国君柱 and then into Qin’s attack on Zhao.
