Overview

魏相 / Wei Xiang enters the wiki through Hanji 429 as the Western Han chancellor who blocks an opportunistic expansion of the Cheshi rescue crisis into a large attack on 匈奴. His contribution is not simple pacifism: he asks 汉宣帝 to classify the purpose of war and then argues that a prestige-driven strike would become the kind of 骄兵 that leads to defeat. Hanji 420 now adds an earlier court-access layer: Xuan uses Wei Xiang as a trusted geishizhong counterweight to the Huo household and accepts his proposal to remove the duplicate memorial-copy channel.

Current Profile

The sources present Wei Xiang as a historically literate, administratively attentive, and information-sensitive official. Hanji 420 shows the court-access version first. Xuan appoints him as geishizhong so that a trusted outer-court official can reach the emperor directly and check 霍显’s household. Wei Xiang then proposes removing duplicate sealed memorial copies, limiting Huo Shan’s ability as a shangshu-controller to see accusations early and decide what reaches Xuan.

In the Cheshi crisis, Zheng Ji’s rescue request creates a tempting military opening because Xiongnu is already occupied around 车师国. Wei Xiang responds by sorting warfare into 义兵, 应兵, 忿兵, 贪兵, and 骄兵. He accepts rescue and response as legitimate categories, but rejects anger, greed, and force-display as strategically and morally dangerous.

His practical case is equally important. Wei Xiang says Xiongnu has recently released Han captives and not raided the border for some time, while Han frontier people are poor and internal governance is strained by official incompetence, disasters, and criminal disorder. The episode therefore makes him a figure of restrained statecraft: military prestige must be tested against naming, proportionality, public burden, and internal capacity.

The profile also includes his governing method. Wei Xiang reads earlier histories, policy proposals, and memorials, pushes useful older measures back into discussion, and asks officials returning from commanderies about anomalies, rebellions, and disasters. When local officials fail to report serious events, he reports them directly to Xuan.

Key Characteristics

  • Western Han chancellor whose remonstrance gives the episode its “骄兵必败” origin.
  • Trusted inner-access counterweight and memorial-channel reformer whose “去副封以防壅蔽” proposal turns anti-Huo politics into procedural repair.
  • War-purpose classifier who distinguishes righteous rescue, defensive response, anger, greed, and proud force-display.
  • Frontier-policy restrainer who prevents the Cheshi rescue from becoming a broader Xiongnu western strike.
  • State-capacity realist who weighs border poverty, internal disorder, disasters, and official failure before approving war.
  • Historically literate administrator who mines earlier policy records for usable governance.
  • Upward-information gatherer who uses returning officials to detect local events hidden from the court.

Evidence

Court access and memorial-channel repair:

  • Hanji 420 says Xuan appoints Wei Xiang as geishizhong so he can see the emperor directly while acting as a counterweight to the Huo family.
  • Hanji 420 says Wei Xiang proposes “去副封以防壅蔽,” removing duplicate sealed memorial copies that let Huo Shan see and potentially block accusations.
  • Hanji 420 treats that proposal as part of Xuan’s wider exclusion of the Huo family from the power center.

War classification and restraint:

  • Hanji 429 says Xuan considers attacking Xiongnu’s west while Xiongnu is attacking Cheshi.
  • Hanji 429 says Wei Xiang first asks the court to clarify the name and purpose of the expedition.
  • Hanji 429 presents his five categories of 义兵, 应兵, 忿兵, 贪兵, and 骄兵.
  • Hanji 429 says Xuan accepts the advice and sends Chang Hui to recover Zheng Ji rather than launching a broad strike.

State-capacity and information practice:

  • Hanji 429 says Wei Xiang cites recent Xiongnu non-raiding, released captives, poor border households, and internal disasters as reasons against major war.
  • Hanji 429 says he reads earlier Han policies and memorials and recommends useful past proposals to Xuan.
  • Hanji 429 says he questions officials about local anomalies, rebellions, and disasters, then reports hidden problems upward.

Qualifications

The page is source-scoped to Hanji 420 and Hanji 429. It does not reconstruct Wei Xiang’s full biography, legal career, complete chancellorship, the original full text of either memorial, or the complete shangshu and sealed-copy procedure. Hanji 429 preserves the idiom-origin claim through the Han Shu / Wei Xiang passage but does not settle later uses of “骄兵必败.”

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 420’s earlier geishizhong and duplicate-memorial-copy reform layer to the existing Hanji 429 Cheshi-Xiongnu remonstrance profile.
