Overview

隗嚣 / Wei Xiao is synthesized as a western rival in the Guangwu founding war whose current profile now covers both his pre-death crisis and the factional continuation after his death. Hanji 707 shows his position weakening through mass surrender, failed response to 刘秀’s survival offer, rescue by 公孙述-backed forces, and temporary recovery of western commanderies. Hanji 708 then preserves his final illness, famine, death, and the continuation of resistance under Wei Chun.

Current Profile

In Hanji 707, Wei Xiao’s western position is already under severe pressure. Liu Xiu’s side wins over subordinate commanders, counties, and large populations, then offers Wei Xiao a chance to surrender personally, see his son again, and avoid destruction. Wei Xiao does not accept; Liu Xiu responds by killing Wei Xun and sending commanders against Xicheng and Shanggui.

The campaign still does not end cleanly. Wu Han and Cen Peng besiege Xicheng, while Geng Yan and Gai Yan pressure Shanggui. Cen Peng’s water attack nearly succeeds, but Wang Yuan, Xing Xun, and Zhou Zong arrive with Gongsun Shu-backed reinforcements, break into Xicheng, and rescue Wei Xiao. Wu Han’s food crisis and retreat then let Wei Xiao retake Anding, Beidi, Tianshui, and Longxi.

Hanji 708 gives the end of that arc. Wei Xiao is old, sick, caught in famine, unable to eat properly, and dies in resentment. His death does not settle the war. Wang Yuan and Zhou Zong elevate his young son Wei Chun, continue the army, and receive further Gongsun Shu support through Zhao Kuang and Tian Yan.

Key Characteristics

  • Western rival of Liu Xiu whose authority is shown collapsing before his final death.
  • Holdout who refuses a survival offer after major subordinate and county surrender.
  • Actor whose resistance survives through Gongsun Shu-backed relief even after severe encirclement pressure.
  • Political-military node whose death does not end the Longyou resistance field.
  • Source-bounded figure currently defined by late crisis, temporary recovery, final illness, famine, succession, and continuing factional resistance.

Evidence

  • Collapse before final siege: Hanji 707 says Wei Xiao-linked generals, counties, and more than 100,000 people surrender to Liu Xiu.
  • Refused survival offer: Hanji 707 says Liu Xiu offers safety and a reunion with Wei Xiao’s son if Wei Xiao personally submits, but Wei Xiao does not surrender.
  • Relief and temporary recovery: Hanji 707 says Gongsun Shu-backed reinforcements enter Xicheng, rescue Wei Xiao, and are followed by Wei Xiao retaking several western commanderies after Han withdrawal.
  • Death conditions: Hanji 708 says Wei Xiao is old, ill, and suffering famine before dying in resentment.
  • Succession and continuation: Hanji 708 says Wang Yuan and Zhou Zong elevate Wei Xiao’s young son Wei Chun and continue resisting with Gongsun Shu’s help.

Qualifications

The page still does not reconstruct Wei Xiao’s earlier career, claim to authority, local-elite base, or full military geography. Hanji 707 and Hanji 708 are late-stage source notes, so the current profile should remain centered on collapse, refusal, outside rescue, temporary recovery, final crisis, and factional continuation. The transcript form 魏瑶 is normalized to 隗嚣 because the western campaign, Gongsun Shu alliance, Xicheng/Longyou context, and Hanji 708 continuation match the established route.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 707 as Wei Xiao’s pre-death collapse, refused surrender offer, Xicheng rescue, and temporary western recovery layer.
  • Preserved Hanji 708 as the final illness, famine, death, and Wei Chun continuation layer.
  • Reframed Wei Xiao as a late-stage holdout whose danger continues both before and after personal death.

Relationships

  • 光武帝刘秀 - opponent whose survival offer Wei Xiao refuses before continued fighting.
  • 公孙述 - allied rival whose reinforcements rescue Wei Xiao and later support Wei Chun.
  • 吴汉 - Han commander whose Xicheng siege and later food-short retreat shape Wei Xiao’s temporary recovery.
  • 岑彭 - Han commander whose siege pressure nearly succeeds and whose rearguard protects the retreat.
  • 温序 - loyalist captured by Wei Xiao’s side before choosing suicide over surrender.
  • 交权换安全 - negative contrast because Wei Xiao rejects the available subordinate-security path.
