Władysław Anders

Overview

Władysław Anders was a Polish officer released from Soviet captivity after Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, organizer and commander of the displaced Polish force known as Anders’ Army, and commander of the Second Polish Corps at the Battle of Monte Cassino.

Current Profile

533. Wojtek: The Bear Who Beat the Nazis presents Anders as one of the Polish officers who survived Soviet custody while thousands of others were murdered at Katyn. The new alliance between Britain and the Soviet Union enabled his release and the formation of a Polish army from prisoners, deportees, and other displaced people. More than 100,000 soldiers and civilians subsequently left Soviet territory through Iran.

In Allied service, the military formation became the Second Polish Corps. Anders accepted a costly role in the assault on Monte Cassino, where Polish troops captured the monastery ruins on 18 May 1944. His command therefore joins military achievement to the political tragedy of soldiers fighting for a homeland that many could not return to after the war.
