Overview

句龙王吾斯 / Wusi is a Southern Xiongnu rebel leader whose current wiki profile links the 140 CE revolt to its later 143 CE cleanup. Hanji 820 shows him rising with Che Niu; Hanji 824 records his later assassination under Ma Shi’s operation.

Current Profile

Chronologically, Wusi first appears in Hanji 820 as a leader of the Southern Xiongnu revolt. He and Che Niu besiege Meiji, kill frontier officials, regroup after an initial defeat by Ma Xu and Liang Bing, and later install Che Niu as a rebel-backed chanyu after Chen Gui coerces Xiuli and the Left Wise King into suicide. Che Niu eventually surrenders after Zhang Dan defeats him at Mayi, but Wusi continues resistance with Wuhuan allies.

Hanji 824 gives the later endpoint: Ma Shi sends assassins who kill Wusi in the 143 CE frontier recovery layer. That death closes a rebellion thread opened three years earlier, not a stand-alone incident.

Key Characteristics

  • Southern Xiongnu factional leader able to restart resistance after tactical defeats.
  • Operates through alliance-making with Che Niu, Wuhuan, Qiang, and other frontier groups.
  • Turns chanyu legitimacy into a battlefield issue by helping install Che Niu after Xiuli’s coerced suicide.
  • Survives Che Niu’s surrender, which means his revolt cannot be reduced to one claimant’s fate.

Evidence

  • Revolt initiation and persistence: Hanji 820 names Wusi as the rebel actor who rises with Che Niu, regroups after defeat, and continues after Che Niu submits.
  • Chanyu-making: Hanji 820 links Wusi to the later installation of Che Niu as chanyu.
  • Later death: Hanji 824 says Ma Shi has Wusi assassinated during the 143 CE frontier cleanup.

Qualifications

The source list preserves ingestion order: Hanji 824 was indexed before Hanji 820, even though Hanji 820 is chronologically earlier. The episode transcript renders the name in ASR-like forms; this page normalizes him as 句龙王吾斯.

What Changed

  • Created a canonical Wusi page that connects the 140 CE revolt in Hanji 820 to the assassination reference in Hanji 824.

Relationships

  • Southern Xiongnu - Wusi is a rebel leader inside its factional politics.
  • Che Niu - Wusi’s partner and later rebel-backed chanyu.
  • Xiuli - the chanyu whose coerced suicide opens space for Wusi’s chanyu-making move.
  • Zhang Dan - defeats Che Niu while Wusi continues resistance.
  • Wuhuan - one of the alliance pools Wusi uses after the revolt spreads.
