夏侯婴 / Xiahou Ying

夏侯婴 / Xiahou Ying enters the wiki through Qinji 129-1 as part of 刘邦’s early anti-Qin field activity. After Liu Bang defeats the Sishui commandery supervisor Ping, Xiahou Ying and 萧何 persuade Ping to surrender Huling County to Liu Bang.

For this source, Xiahou Ying matters as an operational connector inside Liu Bang’s local campaign. The episode does not yet develop his later Han role; it uses him to show that Liu Bang’s side is already combining battlefield pressure with persuasion and local surrender while 张楚政权 faces command breakdown elsewhere.

Hanji 141 adds Xiahou Ying to 刘邦’s trusted Hongmen entourage. The episode identifies him as a life-and-death friend who often served as Liu Bang’s driver; at 鸿门宴, he travels with Liu Bang from 霸上 but remains outside the camp gate with 樊哙, 纪信, 金强, and the cavalry.

Hanji 142 gives Xiahou Ying a return-route role. After Liu Bang leaves the tent and chooses the small-road escape back to 霸上, Xiahou Ying is listed with Fan Kuai, 纪信, and the other close attendants who go through the Lishan-Zhiyang route while Liu Bang rides ahead.

Hanji 146 gives Xiahou Ying a talent-recognition role. When 韩信 is about to be executed under military law, Han Xin’s challenge about whether the Han king wants the world catches Xiahou Ying’s attention. Xiahou Ying releases him, talks with him, and reports him to 刘邦, creating the first 私人进身通道 before 萧何 later makes the stronger recommendation.

Hanji 152 part 2 gives Xiahou Ying his strongest family-protection scene. During Liu Bang’s escape after the 彭城之战, Liu Bang pushes 刘盈 and 鲁元公主 off the cart under Chu pursuit, while Xiahou Ying repeatedly stops to bring them back. The episode says Liu Ying and 吕雉 later remember this rescue, and it also frames Xiahou Ying’s long survival under three rulers through humility and careful role discipline.

Hanji 162-2 adds another escape-driver role. When 刘邦 abandons 成皋 under renewed 项羽 pressure, Xiahou Ying rides with him north across the Yellow River toward 韩信 and 张耳’s camp, where Liu Bang then executes 统帅权再收束.

Hanji 170 part 1 gives Xiahou Ying a persuasion-channel role after victory. 朱家 comes to him in 洛阳 / 洛邑 to argue that 季布 should not be killed for serving 项羽 loyally. Xiahou Ying transmits the argument to Liu Bang, helping turn a personal enemy into a pardoned Han officer and making him part of 旧敌忠义重释.

Hanji 178 adds a Baideng exit role. After 冒顿单于 opens one side of the 白登之围, 陈平 tells 刘邦 not to bolt in panic. Xiahou Ying drives the imperial carriage slowly out while guards aim crossbows outward, making him again the driver in a high-stakes Liu Bang escape.

Hanji 187 gives Xiahou Ying a diagnostic-channel role rather than a driver role. After Ying Bu rebels, Xiahou Ying asks 薛公 / Xue Gong (Han adviser), a former Chu adviser, why Ying Bu must rebel and what strategy he may choose. Xiahou Ying reports the explanation to Liu Bang, prompting Liu Bang to summon Xue Gong directly.

Hanji 188 returns Xiahou Ying to his 沛县 old-follower identity. After Liu Bang grants Pei permanent exemption from tax and corvee, Xiahou Ying joins 曹参 and 樊哙 in asking that 丰邑 / 丰县 receive the same treatment, helping convert the old 雍齿 grievance into local reconciliation.
