Hanji 674 then shows him returning to Yecheng after a setback, only for Liu Xiu to send 吴汉 and 岑彭 to seize the city while Xie Gong is away. He is captured and killed, and his army submits to Liu Xiu. Hanji 673 places Xie Gong in the unsettled Hebei-Gengshi field before Liu Xiu’s formal imperial claim. Xie Gong had fought beside Liu Xiu against Wang Lang, but after the campaign the two hold separate cities around Handan and no longer interact directly. Xie Gong wants to attack Liu Xiu more than once but hesitates because he fears Liu Xiu’s strength.
