新安坑降 / Xinan Massacre

新安坑降 / Xinan Massacre enters the wiki through Hanji 139 as 项羽’s killing of surrendered Qin soldiers after 章邯 has joined the anti-Qin coalition. The episode says the coalition is moving west toward 函谷关 with Chu, Zhao, Qi, Yan, Wei, Han, and about two hundred thousand newly surrendered Qin troops.

The immediate trigger is a camp-security problem. Anti-Qin soldiers resent the surrendered Qin troops because Qin service is associated with forced labor and abuse, while the Qin captives fear that if they fail to destroy Qin and are dragged east, Qin authorities may punish their families. Xiang Yu, 英布, and 蒲将军 decide the prisoners could mutiny or rejoin Qin at the pass.

In the episode’s reading, the decision solves an immediate risk by creating a larger political disaster. Ying Bu and Pu General carry out the night attack south of Xinan, while Zhang Han, 司马欣, and 董翳 are spared. The massacre becomes the clearest post-Julu case where Xiang Yu’s military decisiveness destroys the people-based political security he would need in Qin’s former heartland.
