徐福 / Xu Fu (Western Han adviser)
Updated · 1 episodes · 1 show · 1 source notes
Overview
徐福 / Xu Fu enters the Western Han branch through Hanji 424 as the Maoling man who repeatedly warns 汉宣帝 to restrain the Huo family before its arrogance becomes rebellion. This page is deliberately disambiguated from 徐福 the Qin sea-voyage fangshi and 许负 the physiognomist.
Current Profile
The source gives Xu Fu a narrow but conceptually important role. Before the Huo collapse, he reportedly writes three times that excessive luxury and indulgence will make the Huo household arrogant, offend the ruler, and eventually move toward grave crime. After the Huo purge, Xuan rewards the men who exposed the conspiracy but initially overlooks the adviser who had urged prevention.
Xu Fu becomes memorable through the “曲突徙薪” analogy. A petitioner compares him to the guest who advised moving firewood and bending a chimney before a fire, while the household rewarded only those who fought the flames afterward. Xuan then grants Xu Fu silk and appoints him as a lang official.
Key Characteristics
- Preventive adviser whose warnings focus on restraining the Huo family before rebellion emerges.
- Evidence for the political value of early risk diagnosis rather than post-crisis reward alone.
- Overlooked contributor because Xuan first rewards conspiracy informants but not the person who urged prevention.
- Source of the “曲突徙薪” court lesson in this episode.
- Disambiguated Western Han figure separate from the Qin Xu Fu and the physiognomist Xu Fu.
Evidence
Preventive warning:
- Hanji 424 says Xu Fu warns that Huo luxury and indulgence will produce arrogance, offense against the ruler, and grave disobedience.
- Hanji 424 says he submits three memorials urging Xuan to restrain the Huo family.
Delayed recognition:
- Hanji 424 says Xuan rewards Zhang Zhang, Dong Zhong, Yang Yun, Jin Anshang, Shi Gao, and others for exposing the conspiracy but initially leaves Xu Fu unmentioned.
- Hanji 424 says Xuan later grants Xu Fu silk and makes him a lang official after the “曲突徙薪” argument is presented.
Qualifications
This page is source-scoped to Hanji 424. It does not supply Xu Fu’s full biography, offices before the episode, text of the three memorials, or later career. The route name is disambiguated to prevent collision with other Xu Fu pages.
What Changed
- Created a disambiguated Western Han Xu Fu page for Hanji 424’s preventive-risk advice.
Relationships
- Emperor Xuan of Han / 汉宣帝 / 刘询 / 刘病已 - ruler whom Xu Fu warns before the Huo purge and who later rewards him.
- 霍氏灭族与权力退场失败 / Huo Family Purge After Huo Guang - crisis that Xu Fu tries to prevent before conspiracy becomes punishable.
- 政治风险预防 / Political Risk Prevention - concept created from the preventive logic of Xu Fu’s warning and later reward.
- 霍光 / Huo Guang (Western Han) - deceased regent whose household Xu Fu urges Xuan to restrain.
- Xu Fu / 徐福 - Qin fangshi with the same written name but unrelated wiki branch.
- 许负 / Xu Fu (physiognomist) - separate 许负 figure whose route must not be conflated with this Western Han adviser.
