杨赐 / Yang Ci (late Han)
Updated · 10 episodes · 1 show · 10 source notes
Overview
杨赐 / Yang Ci is a recurring late-Han senior official in the 汉灵帝 corpus. Across the current source set he appears in office churn, disaster-omen interpretation, garden remonstrance, Yellow Turban prewarning, and rescue of 王允. Hanji 890 now backfills an earlier 169 CE snake-omen answer that makes him a source case for survivable indirect remonstrance.
Current Profile
Yang Ci’s current profile is not a simple “ignored loyal minister” story. He repeatedly supplies useful diagnosis to Emperor Ling’s court, but the system converts or blocks the advice in different ways: disaster-linked office turnover, leaked confidential memorials, courtly flattery, delayed Yellow Turban recognition, and favorite-protection all appear in the evidence.
The distinctive addition from Hanji 890 is tactical. Asked about a snake omen, Yang Ci does not directly demand redress for 窦武 and 陈蕃 and does not name 曹节’s faction. He instead shifts the explanation toward the ruler’s authority, harem affection, queen-family power, and inner/outer boundary discipline. Compared with 谢弼’s lethal directness, Yang Ci becomes a case of 迂回进谏自保: still corrective, but angled to keep the speaker alive and present.
Key Characteristics
- Yang Ci is a senior office-holder whose career is visible through repeated appointments, removals, and court crises.
- He uses omen interpretation as a vehicle for political diagnosis rather than as an isolated supernatural claim.
- His advice often identifies institutional disorder: harem and eunuch influence, blocked talent, extravagant projects, private pleasure, and rebellion risk.
- His effectiveness is mixed because correct warnings may be leaked, ignored, overwritten by flattering interpretation, or recognized only after disaster.
- Hanji 890 adds a pragmatic self-protection profile: Yang Ci can preserve correction by redirecting the target and lowering direct factional collision.
- He also appears as a protective senior figure when Wang Yun is near death after Zhang Rang’s retaliation.
Evidence
- Office visibility: Hanji 904, Hanji 907, Hanji 918, and Hanji 920 place Yang Ci inside Three Excellencies appointment, removal, and disaster-linked office churn from 173 through 181 CE.
- Omen diagnosis: Hanji 890 uses the snake omen for an indirect warning about royal authority and inner-court boundaries, while Hanji 912 has Yang Ci connect black qi, a palace rainbow, and hens turning male to harem/eunuch, Hongdu, personnel, forged-command, and extravagance disorder.
- Material remonstrance: Hanji 919 has Yang Ci oppose Emperor Ling’s garden project because it would seize fields, displace residents, and add private pleasure to public burden.
- Yellow Turban warning: Hanji 923 presents Yang Ci as a prevention strategist who wants to disperse 张角’s follower base before blunt suppression triggers revolt, while Hanji 925 records dismissal after a too-direct answer and later vindication of older memorials.
- Protective role: Hanji 931 names Yang Ci with 何进 and 袁隗 among senior figures who help rescue Wang Yun from the death edge.
Qualifications
- Multiple source transcripts render Yang Ci as “杨次”; the page normalizes to 杨赐 because the senior-office roles and later corpus pattern match.
- The omen material is recorded as the sources’ political language and host interpretation, not as an independent claim that omens caused events.
- Yang Ci’s survival in Hanji 890 should not be flattened into pure prudence; the same page keeps his more direct and punished warnings in Hanji 925.
- The source inventory is still episode-led, so the page should be revised again if a fuller historical biography adds career stages outside these podcast notes.
What Changed
- Added Hanji 890 as the earliest current branch for Yang Ci’s 169 CE snake-omen answer.
- Recast Yang Ci as both a repeated diagnostic remonstrant and a tactician of survivable indirect criticism.
- Connected his 169 strategy to the new 迂回进谏自保 concept while preserving later examples where his advice fails or is punished.
Relationships
- Hanji 890 - 169 CE snake-omen remonstrance and indirect-survival contrast.
- Hanji 912 - 178 CE omen-remonstrance branch against harem/eunuch, Hongdu, personnel, and extravagance disorder.
- Hanji 919 - garden remonstrance and public-burden warning.
- Hanji 923 and Hanji 925 - Yellow Turban prewarning, dismissal, and delayed vindication branch.
- Hanji 931 - Wang Yun rescue branch.
- 汉灵帝 - ruler who receives, ignores, partially accepts, or later recognizes Yang Ci’s warnings.
- 谢弼 - direct remonstrance contrast for the 169 CE source.
- 迂回进谏自保 - concept grounded by Yang Ci’s Hanji 890 strategy.
- 君臣反馈失灵 - recurring institutional setting that limits the effect of Yang Ci’s warnings.
