延津之战 / Yanjin Battle (late Han)

Overview

延津之战 / Yanjin Battle is a pre-官渡之战 encounter in which 曹操 uses exposed baggage and controlled timing to break a larger 袁绍 cavalry force and kill 文丑. In the current wiki it functions as the concrete battlefield confirmation that Yuan Shao’s visible strength could be turned into vulnerability by decision and formation control.

Current Profile

Hanji 1044 places the battle after 颜良’s death and Yuan Shao’s angry decision to cross the Yellow River. 沮授 advises caution around Yan Ford and Guandu, but Yuan Shao presses south and weakens Ju Shou’s command instead. Cao Cao positions below the southern slope, lets the enemy see baggage from White Horse, and waits while Yuan cavalry gather and scatter toward the goods.

荀攸 reads the same scene as active bait rather than defensive negligence. When Cao’s officers want to return to camp, Xun You warns that the lure should not be abandoned. Cao then launches fewer than six hundred riders after the Yuan force has lost cohesion, defeating the larger cavalry group and killing Wen Chou.

Key Characteristics

  • Preliminary Guandu encounter rather than the decisive Guandu battle itself.
  • Takes shape after Yuan Shao converts Yan Liang’s death into an angry pursuit and Yellow River crossing.
  • Depends on visible baggage and relaxed horses as a lure that makes Yuan cavalry disperse.
  • Shows Cao Cao and Xun You sharing timing judgment while other officers read the scene defensively.
  • Turns Wen Chou from a famous Yuan-side asset into another morale shock before Guandu.

Evidence

  • Risky crossing context: Hanji 1044 says Yuan Shao pursues south after Yan Liang’s death despite Ju Shou’s warning to first hold Yan Ford and test Guandu more carefully.
  • Lure setup: Hanji 1044 has Cao Cao tell observers to stop reporting the growing enemy count, rest the horses, and leave the White Horse baggage visible.
  • Adviser timing: Hanji 1044 records Xun You identifying the moment as baiting the enemy when other officers want to retreat to camp.
  • Battle outcome: Hanji 1044 says Cao Cao attacks with fewer than six hundred cavalry after the Yuan riders scatter, defeats them, and kills Wen Chou.

Qualifications

The current evidence comes from one source note and should not be expanded into a complete military reconstruction. Hanji 1044 identifies Liu Bei as present with Wen Chou’s cavalry but does not make him the tactical designer of the Yuan-side move. The battle should also stay distinct from the earlier White Horse/Yan Liang episode and from the later decisive Guandu engagement.

What Changed

  • Created this event page from Hanji 1044 to capture the Yanjin bait-and-counterattack before Guandu.

Relationships

  • 官渡之战 - larger campaign horizon for the Yanjin encounter.
  • 曹操 - commander who waits for Yuan cavalry to lose cohesion before attacking.
  • 荀攸 - adviser who recognizes the baggage scene as bait rather than a reason to retreat.
  • 文丑 - Yuan-side general killed in the battle.
  • 刘备 - Yuan-side-aligned participant named with Wen Chou in the cavalry movement.
  • 袁绍 - northern commander whose angry crossing creates the battle context.
  • 沮授 - adviser whose rejected caution frames the crossing risk.
  • 诱敌离位 - tactical pattern illustrated by exposed baggage and delayed counterattack.
